1. What is the difference between a QR code and a barcode?
A traditional barcode (1D) stores data horizontally—usually just a numeric product ID.
A QR code (2D) stores data vertically and horizontally, allowing it to hold URLs, contact info, Wi-Fi credentials, and plain text. Most modern QR code readers support both types automatically.
2. Can QR code barcode readers work with damaged or dirty codes?
Yes, advanced error-resistant readers can decode QR codes even when:
Up to 30% of the code is damaged (torn, scratched, or covered by a logo)
Colors are inverted (light modules on a dark background)
Contrast is low (e.g., dark gray on black)
However, 1D barcodes (UPC/EAN) require a clean, undamaged surface.
3. What’s the maximum distance for scanning a QR code / bar code?
Depends on the code size and camera resolution. A 2 cm (0.8 inch) QR code can typically be scanned from 10–50 cm (4–20 inches).
For larger codes (e.g., on billboards), scanning from several meters away is possible. Use zoom (digital) if your app supports it.
